Grade 1: Foundational spelling principles such as sound-letter relationships, understanding the alphabet and letter order in words, copying words, building visual memory, and beginning writing experiences are the focus for the first 12 weeks. Application of these principles is then reinforced.
Grade 2: Expansion of the basic spelling skills from grade one to include alternate spellings for basic sounds, simple suffixes and the addition of words with two or more syllables. Class activities reinforce these concepts with a variety of activities.
Grade 3: The main emphases for grade three are: 1) solidify sound-letter relationships including basic alternate spellings; 2) employ more visual strategies in learning to spell; 3) expand word difficulty appropriately; and 4) use spelling words in context. Spelling word lists expand to 20 words.
Grade 4: Grade four expands on the student's use of visual memory skills and places a stronger emphasis on the meanings and uses of words. Phonetic principles are reviewed with information on the exceptions to these principles. Spelling word lists are 20 words in length.
Grade 5: All of the basic phonetic principles and spelling generalizations are reviewed with a special emphasis on the exceptions to these principles. In addition to the target and high frequency use words, student word lists include frequently misspelled words and words of advanced vocabulary levels.
Grade 6: Sixth grade expands on the concept of word building introduced in the fifth grade. Student exercises include vocabulary development, studies of word origins, use of words in context, proofreading, dictionary skills development, research and use of resources.
